Thread getting caught around bobbin case

When I start sewing the top thread gets caught around the bobbin case and i was wondering if the bobbin needs the metal case for it or not. I have a elna supermatic sewing machine, serial number 62DF332681. the last known service i believe was in 1978, we bought the machine from an old neighbor.
