Question:

Thread/material jam in Janome Sewist 625

Learning to sew. So far I have tested the machine multiple times on a scrap of lightweight cotton/poly weave. It will sew forward just fine....I see a little of the top thread on the bottom, which I understand must be a tension issue. The primary problem is reverse....I am so frustrated. If you put the machine in reverse as in the beginning of a seam, it hangs up, creates a ball of thread in the bobbin case under the thread plate and sometimes sucks the material in with it. Of course, with the thread jammed that way the machine stops. I have cleaned it out (twice), rethreaded three times in a meticulous fashion with the manual in view (which isn't all that in depth or helpful), and I'm about to replace the needle and adjust the tension in some fashion, but I really don't know what I'm doing. Some guidance would be appreciated. Somehow I thought this would be a little easier and I'm beginning to get intimidated.
