Question:

Threatened by OB ?

I know you're supposed to wait 6 weeks after giving birth, especially by c-section before you start getting intimate again but that most women go by physical preference, ie-they feel healed enough. My OB told me she can't/won't put me on birth control unless I wait the full 6 weeks to start having s*x again. Do all OBs say this, or is she really strict?

I had my daughter on the 10th and I'm not supposed to see her til the 24th of next month for the post partum checkup. I see her on the 2nd for a follow up to an infected incision and uterus that have gone away. Should I just ask her to put me on birth control NOW instead of waiting another month?

  1. I think you should ask her, or if not stick with condoms for a while!

  2. Wow! That seems pretty extreme to me. My doctor had me start bc 10 days after I had my daughter. She needs to realize that your body needs a month to adjust to the bc before you should start being sexually active again. This is going to put you 2 months behind now.

  3. MY husband and I had to wait 10 MONTHS because of a troubles pregnancy, retained placenta and than a D&C 8 weeks after the birth. The risk of infection is REAL high after giving birth.

Yeah it sucked but when I was completely recovered and had the docs okay, it was better than ever. I guess it meant more too.

Just wait the 6 weeks and look forward to enjoying eachother again.

  4. My ob made me wait my six weeks

  5. strict  but she knows best

  6. Just tell her she has to or you  are going to see someone else.  My doc told me I could have intercourse after 3 weeks although it was pretty painful.

  7. yes she is strict..but she knows best...i went and had s*x at 4 weeks...i just used a condom.

  8. Well I don't see that as a threat, this doc has your best interests in mind. Why don't you just use a condom until you can get your BC?

  9. depends if you are breast feeding. you are suggested to not use any "chemical" means of birth control. My doctor wont put me on the pill at all while I am nursing. He suggested to use condoms and breast feeding. But I suggested the NOVA IUD (chemical free) and he said it was a great idea. Still wont put it in until my 6 week check up though. I don't think many doctors would put you on the pill that soon after having a baby. Just wait it out. if you are comfortable having s*x, then use condoms for now. Also remember, the pill isn't considered effective until you have been on it for 3 months. So you will need to use condoms until that point anyways...

  10. um wouldnt it be smarter to put you on it now so its some what in your system by the time you do start having s*x... huh she sounds looney unless it will effect healing and such IDK

  11. Your doctor doesn't want to start you on BC if you could possibly be pregnant. That is all it is. If you feel healed and you are going on a kind of BC that doesn't take any testing prior to starting the method I don't see why you couldn't start the pills on the 2nd. Just ask.

  12. You should just wait.  It will be much better if you wait the six weeks.

It is pretty standard, though, to discuss birth control options at the 6 week appointment.  If you are going to be adding hormones, it really helps to have the breastmilk a little more regulated before starting BC (if you are breastfeeding). Also, it give you a chance to stop bleeding before the BC begins to regulate your period.

Your call, though. It won't hurt to ask for a prescription.  If you are going in anyway, let her know that you'd like to start taking them now.
