Three Australian players made it to the second round of the U.S. Women's Amateur
Australia is well represented in the U.S. Women's Amateur. The six golfers who originally qualified for the first round are now reduced to three.
The most surprising news for the Australian players was the defeat of the star player Minjee Lee. Lee is a highly respected player who won the recent U.S. Girls' Junior Championship. She is a player who has a reputation of excellence in the golf course.
Perhaps, it might console the Australian fans that she lost to another well known player. Erynne Lee is another renowned player, who is a respected name in the amateur golf circles.
She has reached the final stages of the US Women’s Amateur a couple of times before. In 2008, she played in the semi finals of the tournament.
The first Australian player to make it to the second stage of 32 is Su-Hyun Oh. Oh finished the qualifying round in the 24th place. She played well and many observers had high hopes for her success.
She faced the English golfer Holly Clyburn in the first round of 64. The match was exciting and Oh was in total control from the start. The first three holes established her control over the match and this lasted till the end. The final score was 4 and 2
in Oh’s favour.
The second player is Breanna Elliot, who had it easy. She finished the qualifying stage on an excellent note and was placed 14th in the final rankings.
She was paired with Casey Danielson from the US. Danielson was way down the rankings, at the 51st place. The final score was a 3 and 2 win in favour of the Australian player.
Ashlee Dewhurst, the third player to make it to the second stage also had it easy. She was paired with Alexandra Papell from Florida, USA.
The match proved to be one sided with the Australian player playing in the lead on almost every hole. Many observers said that it was the poor form of Papell that played a greater role in Dewhurst’s win. The final score was 6 and 5 in Dewhurst’s favour.
