Three Blue Grass Stakes candidates turned in works at Keeneland
As the final Kentucky Derby prep races unfold and show a different picture of what was expected and anticipated before the last of these prep races, one more prep race of high significance is yet to unfold, and that is the Grade 1, $750,000 Toyota Blue Grass
Stakes set to go underway on 14 April, 2012, over the Keeneland’s synthetic surface over a distance of 1 1/8 miles.
The Blue Grass Stakes has reeled in a competitive and a full field with Hansen likely to head with field. There are a lot of good runners running in this race, and Hansen, who is expected win the Blue Grass Stakes going into the Derby, will first have to
contend with the Grade 3 Palm Beach Stakes runner-up, Dullahan.
The Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby winner, and the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby runner up, Prospective and Golden Ticket will vie for the 1 1/8 mile event, while third in the Grade 3 Swale Stakes, Ever So Lucky would love to bounce back and with the Grade 1 Blue Grass
Stakes.
However, much less in contention for the Blue Grass Stakes, three likely candidates of the race Howe Great, Adirondack King, and Politicallycorrect took the field to run in their respective workouts before the race.
John C. Servis trained for Marchfore Thoroughbreds, Adirondack King turned in five furlongs over the Keeneland’s main track on 7 April, and covered the distance in 59 4/5 seconds.
Exiting a victory in the Gulfstream Park’s allowance/optional claimer, Politicallycorrect also turned in five furlongs and he covered the distance in 59 seconds flat, while the third bullet work was turned in by Team Valor International’s Howe Great, who
took longest of them all to cover the five furlong distance in 1 minute and 1 3/5 seconds.
“The cooler weather really quickened the track up,” trainer John Servis said. “This was a little better than his last work (a 1:02 3/5 move April 1 that was Adirondack King’s first work on Polytrack). The last work was pretty unproductive.”
Trainer Graham Motion has another Kentucky Derby hopeful other than Howe Great. The Spiral Stakes winner, Went The Day Well, will take the same course as the 2011 Kentucky Derby winner, Animal Kingdom.
