Three Brazilian duos make it to men’s qualifiers at Brasilia Open – Volleyball news
The men’s competition at the 2012 Brasilia Open got the green light on Tuesday, April 17. The opening day of the tournament featured the Country Quota Playoffs, where duos from Brazil, Canada, and USA came into stride.
A total of seven tandems competed at the Brazilian Country Quota Playoffs but only three duos clinched success and advanced to the next round of the tournament. Luciano-Gilmário, Santos-Vitor Felipe, and Pitta-Lipe finished as winners at CQs and clawed their
way to the men’s Qualification Tournament slated for Wednesday.
The duo of Luciano and Gilmário opened the day and clashed with compatriots De Paula and Hevaldo. The opening set of the match was full of thrilling moments as both teams displayed good effort to score points. De Paula/ Hevaldo gave a good competition to
Luciano-Gilmário but dropped the opening affair with a margin of only three points (18-21). After the first-set defeat, the Hevaldo stormed the opponents’ half with powerful cross-court shots.
Meanwhile, his team partner actively participated in the digging and diving. Eventually, the pairing of De Paula/ Hevaldo managed to win second set 21-16, which tied the game score 1-1.
Luciano-Gilmário proved to be better in third decisive set and claimed 2-point victory at 21-19. They won the opening match 2-1 and carried the momentum into next match against Benjamin and Álvaro Filho. In the second match, Luciano-Gilmário played with
more confidence and scored a 2-0 (21-15, 24-22) victory.
With two wins in hand, the pairing of Luciano and Gilmário promptly settled for the next round of the tournament.
Third match in the Brazilian Country Quota Playoffs brought Santos-Vitor Felipe in competition with Thiago-Ferramenta. The former duo started out well in the match and managed to take an early lead. The better position of opponents put pressure on Thiago-Ferramenta
and they caught up in unforced mistakes. Santos and Vitor Felipe showed consistency in attack and defence, which led them first-set win at 21-14.
The second set unfolded the similar story. Santos -Vitor Felipe controlled the action on the net and did not allow the opposite side to come up. Thiago-Ferramenta used many different options but failed to save the set. They had to put up with defeat in the
match after the loss second straight set (15-21).
Victory enabled the winning duo of Santos and Vitor Felipe to enter the men’s qualifiers on Wednesday.
Pitta-Lipe took on Bruno-Maciel in the last Brazilian CQ on Tuesday. The match spanned over three sets and continued for almost one hour. Pitta and Lipe proved to be better in the opening set and went on front with 21-18 victory.
However, they could not stop Bruno-Maciel to win the next frame with two-point lead at 22-20. In the tie break third set, Pitta-Lipe posted 15-12 and won the match. Eventually, Pitta-Lipe emerge as third duo that moved to the qualifiers.
