Three Namibian teams secure places at the African Championships – Volleyball news
The Namibian Volleyball Federation hosted a wonderful Open Beach Volleyball Tournament this past Saturday.
Beach volleyball tandems from South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia participated in the tournament and displayed their wonderful game skills. At the end of competition, three teams from host Namibia captured the spotlight by securing places at the African Volleyball
Championships. The Namibian Open Beach Volleyball Tournament was sponsored by Bank Windhoek and it took place at the Mole in the coastal city of Swakopmund.
The tournament featured competitions for junior and youth teams of both gender players. Duos from South Africa dominated the whole scene with their terrific efforts and settled for top positions in most categories. The Open Beach Volleyball Competition ran
in parallel to the CAVB Zone VI Youth Qualification tournaments, while great number of volleyball enthusiasts showed up.
In the boys’ youth tournament, Namibian duo of Tin Hlupic and Gerard Fischer left everyone behind and finished as the top team. The home team was challenged by Taswell / Lazuko of South Africa. The hosts used the competitive edge of playing at home and downed
the opponents.
On the other hand, the Namibian female duo of Lientjie Titus and Maike Brand also exhibited good performance in girls’ youth competition but they were detracted by South African pairing of Christen and Kayla Lee. The visiting team sustained the pressure
of local audience and pulled off success in the crucial match.
Elsewhere, the Namibians could not reach the top of podium In Junior Boys’ category. The pairing of Gero Talkenberg and Bernard Schurz played under the tag of hosts and went against Dean / Carlo of RSA. The home team finished second in the match but managed
to qualify for the African Championships.
According to the set formula of the competition, the winners and runners-up both advanced to the African Championships.
The President of Namibian Volleyball Federation (NVF), Heiko Diehl, stated, “We initiated this competition due to popular request of local, as well as international participants. It is our strategy to grow this event into an FIVB (International Volleyball
Federation) Satellite Event.”
The African Volleyball Championships are held biannually and they create the opportunity for national teams to prove their endeavours. The Confederation African de Volleyball (CAVB) is the governing body, which organised these tournaments. In the 2012 season,
African Championship will be kicked off in May and they will be continued till October.
The 2012 Men’s African Club Champions Championship will take place from April 21-30 in Tunisia, while the similar women’s championship will be held in Kenya from May 10-19.
Later on, the African Men’s and Women’s Junior Nations Championship will take place in Nigeria and Morocco, respectively. Egypt and Burkina Faso will hosts boys’ and girls’ youth championships in September and October.
