We are buying a house with extensive media wiring. We cannot ask the previous owners what each wire is for because the home is bank owned. Each room has speaker wiring at all four corners (a bit much if you ask me). What we really want to know is why each room also has three coaxle cables? ny help would be appreciated. Oh and besides the three cables coming from one box in the room, there is also the standard satellite cable as well. Is that four??

  1. How many aerials on the roof? I suspect that one co-axial is for TV and one for FM radio, if one is only 50 ohms it could be that they had a transmission unit somewhere in there too. Your satellite cable should be 50 ohm impedance too and should end in an F-plug (the long kind that s***w in).

  2. Are the cables red, green and blue?

If so - these are component video cables so you can send video to a TV in the room. Hopefully the speakers take care of the sound.

If the coaxial cables are just black or white - I suspect one is from a Sat dish on the roof so you could hook in a DirectTV or DishNetwork receiver into any room to drive a TV.

One of the others is probably your local cable company.

You need to look for a "utility" closet where all these cables terminate.  There is often a "star" pattern to the wiring.  Every room gets 3 coaxial cables, and the feed from the main sat dish and cable company also come into the room.  A large patch panel with "F" connectors lets you wire things together.
