Question:

Three credit bureaus won't allow me to view my credit report?

I just turned 18 and I tried to open a checking account with HSBC. However, to verify my identity they asked me a particularly odd question, about a mortgage taken out in April 2008. They asked me to name the account provider and amount paid. I became curious, and decided to perform a credit check. When I filled out the application they too asked me the same question, when I was unable to answer. They told me I would not be able to view my credit report online.

Can someone, take out a mortgage using my social security number, even though I was 17 in April 2008? If so,what can I do, how will this affect my credit? Where do I go to find out additional information? Who would I report it to?

  1. you might have to get it through the mail. But anytime you are denied credit you have 30 days to request a copy of your credit report. if you look at the paper they sent you denying your credit there should be the information for the credit bureau they used. then if you see anything wrong contact the credit report and they can help you from there.

  2. Bdancer is correct.

It's a common trick/security question.  It doesn't necessariy mean someone has stolen your identity. Just answer as only you would know it.

  3. Sounds like someone may have stolen your identity.  Good luck with that.

  4. Request your reports in writing.  Send copies of your DL and SS(with all but the last 4 blacked out) as proof of ID.

Were you trying to go thru www.annualcreditreport.com ?

  5. No, it isn't fraud or ID theft.  These are security questions the credit bureaus ask to make sure you are really you.  If you don't have a mortgage, answer "none" or "n/a".  You may run into some other questions that really don't pertain to you.  Just respond with "none" or "n/a".

  6. There is information on identity theft in this link:

    http://www.usdoj.gov/criminal/fraud/webs...

You can try contacting the credit agencies by phone.

    Good luck!
