Three days left for decision on Ricky Ponting’s cricketing future
The haunting issue of Ricky Ponting’s cricketing future is expected to be resolved in the next three days with the announcement of the Australian One-Day International (ODI) squad for the tour of Bangladesh next month.
According to media reports, Cricket Australia (CA) is likely to announce the squad for the three-match ODI in Bangladesh on Wednesday. The cricketing career of the skipper came under immense fire after Australia’s humiliating 3-1 Ashes defeat to England
in 2010.
"I'll have the opportunity over the next couple of days to reflect on where things are headed for me and certainly what direction I feel things are heading for the betterment of Australian cricket," the captain told reporters.
The veteran also said that he may step down from the captaincy but would like to continue playing under the captaincy of Michael http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Clarke-c51120, who is currently the vice-captain of the Aussies. Ponting who has served his team as a captain for nine years, earlier
in a statement, showed a great keenness for the tour of Bangladesh saying that he will keep playing.
Omission from the World Cup quarter-final proved worse for the Ponting, as he had to face a severe criticism. Although, he gave a remarkable performance in the quarter-final against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 by scoring 104 runs, he remained unable to save his team from exclusion.
Before this, Australia also lost a group match to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 where they were restricted to 176 in 46.4 overs, which was their lowest score since 1992.
Apart from this, the player has also been criticized for his attitude, as in the ongoing tournament he broke a TV in his dressing room after being run out during the Aussies’ group match victory over http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Zimbabwe-c3045. Ponting’s misbehaviour was also observed during
the group match against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Canada-c748, when he spiked the ball on to the ground after having a collision with his team-mate Steven Smith while attempting to take a catch.
ICC World Cup 2011 was the fifth and perhaps last mega event of his career. In 42 ODI innings, Ponting has scored 1743 runs at an average of 45.86 including five centuries and six fifties.
