Three footballers not to be part of London 2012 Olympic Games
It has recently been revealed that three athletes of the United Kingdom will not be taking part in the London 2012 Olympic Games. The players that are not entitled to the Games are Wayne Rooney, Jack Wilshere and Phil Jones. The reason for their non-participation
is that the three athletes would be going to Poland and Ukraine, that will not make them eligible for selection for the Olympics.
The three named athletes are in line to make an appearance at the Euro 2012 in order to represent England. The Football Association has identified this reason for not selecting the three players for the Olympic Games next year. Had Stuart Pearce of the Football
Association not made this decision, both Jones as well as Wilshere would have qualified for the selection while Rooney would have made it to the over-age player category.
Pearce, who is the coach of the men’s football team of Great Britain, explained himself in the following words about the issue: “We have had discussions as we come now to notifying the long list of the players who could potentially be selected and it is
important to make clear what we have agreed regarding England players who will be at Euro 2012. We have agreed that any player who boards the plane to the European Championship in Ukraine and Poland will not be considered for selection to Team GB.”
Interestingly, Pearce was not very enthusiastic about the idea of not selecting the players participating in the Euro 2012 championship.
The Football Association has started to inform the players that they are being considered for the Olympic Games. These notifications have been started from this week. Ther are numerous players int he selection pool but the final decision will be made subject
to the acceptance of players that have been notified.
