Three games into the season, John Wall already breaking records and turning heads
John Wall, the speedy number-one pick in last summer’s NBA Draft, has already made NBA history after only three career games. And the Washington Wizards’ point guard is turning heads around
the league while doing it.
His statistics through three games are not only ridiculously high but they are also historically important. With his team at 1-2 on the season, Wall is averaging 23.7 points, 10.3 assists,
and 4.0 steals per game.
In his home debut against the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday 2 November, Wall posted 29 points, 13 assists, and nine steals, becoming the first NBA player to reach these numbers in the
history of the league. His accomplishment becomes that much more impressive when you consider that Wall was playing with a sprained right ankle.
"Dude's a rocket," said Lou Williams of the Sixers of Wall’s impressive speed.
Sixers’ coach Doug Collins also showered the rookie point guard with praise.
"He is a point guard," he said. "When I say that, a lot of guys get brought up where they say they are point guards, where really they are not. John Wall is a point guard. He's a leader
and a winner. Speed. Strength. Size. He's going to be an amazing player if he stays healthy, and let's hope he does."
Another coach is equally impressed.
"I think that when we took him, we knew that he was very dynamic," said
Washington coach Flip Saunders. "We knew he had the ability to do those things. I'm more impressed with his ability to never say die, his competitiveness to win games."
With his performance against the Sixers, Wall became only the fourth player in NBA history to record at least 20 points and 10 assists in his home debut, joining Isiah Thomas, Oscar Robertson,
and Norm Nixon.
Moreover, Wall is only the second player in NBA history, along with Robertson, to tally at least 70 points and 30 assists over their first three games. Wall has 71 and 31 while Robertson
had 72 and 30.
"That's a great accomplishment, to be honest, but Oscar Robertson's the only player to ever average a triple-double in a season so that's something that's hard to do,” said Wall. “It's
great to be in a category with him, but he already proved himself on this level and did everything. I'm still working."
