Three home-runs help Kansas City Royals beat Detroit Tigers 9-5 – MLB Update
A flurry of home-runs helped the Kansas City Royals defeat the Detroit Tigers 9-5 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Monday, August 29 allowing them to reduce the gulf between themselves and American League Central division leaders Detroit by 17.5
games.
The Royals have had an ordinary run this season but a reformation in the line-up proved to be fruitful in this game. Alex Gordon gave the Royals a dream start when he launched a 353-feet home-run down the right field in the first inning before Salvador Perez’s
RBI effort down the centre-field allowed Johnny Giavotella to double the lead for the Royals as early as the second inning.
Kansas City did not let this momentum come to a halt and went all-out in the third inning where they managed to bag three crucial-runs and take the score to 5-0 by the end of the third inning. Melky Cabrera, Billy Butler and Eric Hosmer had fortified all
three bases and a Giavotella RBI to the left field allowed all three players to complete their runs in what can be termed as an epic display of teamwork.
The home side failed in every effort to restrict the flow of runs but the Royals had planned otherwise. However, where Detroit’s pitching staff failed to come up with an answer, the batting fired at just the right moment. Wilson Betemit, Don Kelly and Delmon
Young scored a run each for the Tigers in the third inning to bring the score at 5-3 and reignite the encounter.
Max Scherzer has been Detroit’s ace this season but had to face a failure in this game after a pretty ordinary spell at the mound which saw him commit seven errors. The most unpleasant sight, however, came in the fourth inning when Salvador Perez and Alcides
Escobar launched back-to-back home-runs against Scherzer to complete his eighth loss of the season. He gave away seven runs in his spell to see his ERA creep up to 4.52 for the season.
The Tigers showed portions of brilliance in their effort but a two-run sixth inning followed by Blake Wood’s first save for the Royals sealed the night for Kansas City.
