Question:

Three hour glucose test -- hope this isn't true?

This question will not post on my account I have no idea why -- this is try number FOUR and if it doesn't work I'll be irritated. (This isn't my account so maybe it will work!) Wasting my points.

I have NEVER heard of this before -- but I was just browsing through other questions and someone said that if you throw up during your three hour glucose test it's an automatic fail? How can they do this? It's not like cheating on a test in school -- if they aren't actually testing you, and your stomach just can't handle that drink after not having anything else in it, is this possible? I mean I highly doubt it, just wondering though. Thanks!

  1. Every time I had to take the 3 hr they always told me that if I threw up I'd have to come and do it again. Thank god I never did!

  2. 'fail' means i guess u would have to repeat the test.....not that u have GD!

  3. I don't know if that is true or not but the liquid has a concentrated amount of sugars and the test is to see how your body handles it with insulin.  If you throw up the liquid, it is possible that they can't test your body's metabolism of the sugar.  I don't know if that is correct but that is what I can guess.  And it wouldn't automatically mean that you fail and have gestational diabetes.  It would probably mean that they would have to re-do the test.  But maybe if you throw it up, it is fine.

  4. Talk to your doctor.  There are specific foods that you can eat instead of having to drink that extremely sweet drink.  The foods were treats for me to...couple cookies, piece of candy...things like that.  Most doctors would rather you be able to eat those foods and keep them down rather than drinking the "drink" and getting sick!  It's very worth asking.  Most doctors have a printed out list of foods you need to eat to replace the drink they just don't offer it to patients unless they ask!!!

  5. it is very rare that you will throw up, i mean is a really sweet drink but its not awful and what i know is that it is an hour test not three hours, unless its a different one but they might just re-test you

  6. It's not an automatic fail you just have to come back another day and do it again

You do the 3 hour test if you fail the 1 hour test. I failed the 1 hour and had to take the 3 hour test. It was gross but not terrible. The biggest thing that sucks is getting your blood drawn 4 times and having to sit at the lab for 3 hours.

  7. They will have to retest you because if you throw the orange stuff up..they cant tell what your blood sugar is so therefore you fail and have to either be treated like a diabetic or risk your baby's health and your own health. Good luck and try not to throw it up.

  8. If you vomit during the test, its not that you automatically fail.  It just means that the test if over, and you have to come back another day.  I just had one, and asked the same question.
