Three players out of Spain squad
Spain national team coach Vincente del Bosque has suffered a blow ahead of crucial UEFA 2012 European Football Championship qualifying matches with the news that three players have been forced out of the
squad.
Fernando Torres, Pedro Rodriguez and Jesus Navas Gonzales are the trio who will miss out after they picked up injuries over the weekend.
Liverpool striker Torres was taken off of the pitch after just 10 minutes of his side’s home defeat at the hands of Blackpool in the English Premier League. His manager Roy Hodgson confirmed that the 26-year-old
2010 FIFA World Cup winner had picked up a groin strain.
He said that: "It is a groin strain, I don't know how severe. It came as a surprise to us, we had no awareness there were any problems in the groin area. I don't know if it was something which happened
during the course of the game."
Winger suffers from torn hamstring
Pedro has been confirmed by Barcelona to have suffered a torn hamstring in Sunday’s 1-1 draw in La Liga against Mallorca. The winger has been ruled out of action for at least three weeks.
Meanwhile, Sevilla midfielder Navas was forced to sit out his side’s win over Atletico Madrid as he is suffering from a thigh strain. The muscle injury means that he will face around two weeks on the sidelines.
The withdrawals mean that Del Bosque will have to call up replacements as the world champions hope to qualify for Euro 2012 and go on to retain their European crown. According to Spanish daily newspaper
Marca, he may look to bring in Valenica players Pablo Hernandez, Roberto Soldado and Aritz Aduriz.
Spain will next take on Lithuania on 8 October at home and will then travel to Glasgow to face Scotland on 12 October.
