Three players recommit with New Zealand Rugby Union and the Blues until the end of 2012: Rugby News
Three Blues’ players signed a deal with the New Zealand Rugby Union to play for the All Blacks and the Blues until the end of 2012.
The trio includes two All Blacks’ campaigners, Alby Mathewson and Benson Stanley, and Blues’ full-back, Lachie Munro.
Mathewson and Stanley have been playing for New Zealand’s national rugby team since 2010.
The deal has come out at a very crucial time for the Blues as they are currently ruling on the point’s table in the ongoing Super Rugby championship.
Blues’ coach, Pat Lam, welcomed the contracts and said that it will further boost the team’s performance.
Pat Lam appreciated the new deal since the trio was being approached by various circles but they preferred to stay with the Blues.
He added, “On the back of Keven re-signing with us, to have secured Alby and Benson is a real testament to them and their belief in our vision and what we are trying to achieve”.
The coach also praised Lachie for his commitment with the Blues and said that he was pleased with the full-back’s re-signing.
New Zealand Rugby Union’s General Manager of Professional Rugby, Neil Sorensen, also welcomed the deal and declared it as great news for New Zealand’s rugby.
Neil Sorensen said that the All Blacks’ pair has shown real character by staying with the Blues and this would inspire the young players.
Confirming the news of his new contract, All Blacks’ Alby Mathewson said that he was happy to stay with the Blues.
He joined the blues during last Super Rugby season as he parted from the Hurricanes.
Mathewson said, “I'm really enjoying my rugby with the Blues, so I've signed up for some more. Also a big part of the decision-making for me is an All Black one. I'm still aiming for that black No 9 jersey”.
The other All Blacks’ star, Stanley, told the media that his family was the real factor behind his decision to sign the new deal.
