Three reasons why Derrick Williams is a better bet than Kyrie Irving – NBA Draft Special
University of Arizona Wildcats’ power forward Derrick Williams and Duke’s Kyrie Irving are two stars that are being tipped to be the top picks in this year’s NBA draft that will be held next week. The second worst team of the last
season, Cleveland Cavaliers have the number one draft pick this time around and they can choose anyone from Williams and Irving. However they are in a rather tricky proposition.
Cleveland also have the fourth pick overall. One of the players who will be left on the board in the first place by the Cavaliers won’t be available with the fourth pick as Derrick and Kyrie are anticipated to be selected by then.
While Irving is backed by many to be the next big thing, Williams brings together the attributes of agility, pace and a good shooting prowess. Here are the 3 top reasons why Derrick Williams will be better than Kyrie Irving in the world of NBA.
Versatility
The 6 feet 9 inch Williams has no match when it comes to the agility and versatility. In comparison with the 19-year-old Irving who is limited to the point guard position, Derrick can play at both the forward positions – small
and power. To add to that, his massive physique gives him a huge edge on the glass and he can be pivotal in stimulating the defensive system of the team. And then there is his impeccable shooting and dribble that will be a big threat for any opposition.
Derrick is a complete package and he has the ability to replicate LeBron James and take Cleveland Cavaliers to the top single-handedly. The Cavaliers desperately need an all-round performer as Williams is just the right guy for
the team.
Experience
The 20-year-old Williams carries a substantial edge on Irving when it comes to the experience and the playing hours at collegiate level. Derrick showcased his brilliance during the two seasons with the University of Arizona while
Kyrie missed a number of games during his freshman year with the Duke University of Blue Devils. Let stats do the talking. Irving played only 11 games in college and has much to prove, whereas Williams carries a huge playing experience with 69 games.
Better on the offense
Williams possesses all kind of shots in offensive arsenal. Derricks is flawless from the field, very aggressive with his jumpers and an alarming threat for the opposition from beyond the arc. During his sophomore year, Williams
took his offensive game to the next level as he led the college league with a shooting percentage of 69 percent and connected 65 percent from the field. Derrick has turned himself into a constant double-double threat and finished the last season with an average
of 19.5 points and 8.3 rebounds per game.
There is no doubt that Irving is an outstanding player however Williams’ experience, versatility and dominating offensive game makes him a better player.
