Three reasons why Phil Emery will be a success at Chicago Bears - NFL Special
A new regime is taking hold at the Chicago Bears and as Phil Emery takes on the role of general manager from the departed Jerry Angelo, and expectations are high for the first time general manager to turn things around at Halas Hall.
Chicago on Monday introduced Emery to the press after the ex-Kansas City Chiefs Director of player personnel impressed President Ted Phillips with his depth of knowledge and his plans to return the Bears to the Super Bowl.
A general manager of a National Football League (NFL) franchise has many tasks, ranging from drafting players to negotiating contracts, and we, athttp://american-football.bettor.com,
provide you with three main reasons why Emery will be a success at Chicago.
His fourteen year experience
Phil Emery has a long history with the NFL when he first started working in the league joining from the United States Naval Academy to take over a scouting role with the Chicago Bears.
From 1998 to 2004 Emery worked for the Bears in a role which will define him throughout his NFL stint. As a scout he pinpointed emerging college talent and identified players who would add value to the Bears roster.
His previous experience as a strength and fitness coach with various universities across the US also allowed him to keenly judge the inherent talents of players.
After a six year stint at Halas Hall, Emery moved on to Atlanta Falcons where he would remain for four years as the Director of College scouting before taking over the same role at the Kansas City Chiefs in 2009.
This experience of identifying players is crucial for any general manager and no one does it more thoroughly than Emery.
Emery’s attention to detail
As many previous colleagues and players will attest, the new Bears general manager has a keen eye for detail.
During his days as strength and conditioning coach for the US Naval Academy Emery could be seen reviewing player tapes and advising them on how their diet and health could improve their effectiveness on the field.
Even snow days could not stop Emery from doing his job.
According to his former Naval team Captain Clint Bruce, the team had a conditioning session at 5:00 am in the morning however, it was a snow day and with six-feet of snow on the road they were sure that Emery would not make it.
"I peeked around the door and saw Phil standing there with his whistle on, so radioed back, 'Hurry, he's here! He's here!" Bruce recalled Sunday. "We were sure he wouldn't make it. But he probably slept there. Phil was the most convincing, inspiring and
compelling man I've ever known."
If Emery can bring the same kind of attention to detail and determination to his new job, Chicago may have made their best decision in the offseason already.
Another former Naval team player, fullback Omar Nelson has also praised Emery’s eye for detail.
"Here was my strength coach watching enough tape to tell me he thought I'd hit holes better at 218," said Nelson. "I bet him I still would be 218 in October. But I didn't want no dinner or trophy. We bet the sunglasses he always wore during summer workouts."
The fullback went down to 218 pounds and later would setup a game winning field goal in a match against the US Air force.
His impressive negotiation skills
In his interview session with the Bears, Emery was the frontrunner for the job from the day he gave his first interview.
The new general manager impressed President Ted Phillips a lot with his depth of vision and his plans for Chicago and how he would achieve them as he beat out four other candidates to take over the role.
Phillips is not one to be impressed easily yet in his press conference on Monday said that when he first interviewed Emery he was taken in by his vision for the franchise.
All other candidates talked about taking Chicago to the Super Bowl but Emery gave specific details on how to achieve that feat.
