  1. Mass communications:

    Broadcast radio

    Broadcast television

    Newspapers and magazines

In each case the internet has replaced these media to some extent (or to a large extent).

You can get streaming audio in place of broadcast radio

YouTube and other video sites have widely replaced what we watch on broadcast and direct (cable/satellite) TV.  We can pull up whole TV episodes of our favorite shows, on demand, using streaming video.

Newspapers and magazines have their own on-line editions.  You no longer need a printing press and a large publishing house to publish your own material.  Bloggers and niche news sites have almost replaced large corporation based reporters.  Books are now published in electronic form.  PDF files are wonderful tools to contain words and graphics.

Bottom line: you no longer need a radio, TV, or printed paper for your information or entertainment needs.

  2. 1. The most important is that it is frictionless, i.e. cost is near zero, which is why we have so many spam versus just sending out junk US Mail in paper.  Some noted paradigm shift are craigslist.org, ebay.com, etc.

    2. Anyone can put up content into the Internet and accessed by anyone.  Example as previously noted with YouTube.  The control of content is no longer in the hands of a few privileged editors.  Other paradigm shifters are Napster, and other P2P.

    3. The medium is no longer one-way broadcast, i.e. it is two-way.  Blogging is possible while previously, people had to send in comments.

And we can all thank Al Gore for the Internet.  But seriously, the 4 people that have provided a profound influence in the shaping of the Internet are:

    1. Al Gore

    2. Bill Gates

    3. Bob Metcalfe

    4. Ray Noorda

See link below for why this is so.

  3. It didn't, really, the telegraph was a bigger change to communications by making communication nearly instant and global.  However, whereas telegraphs were only used by skilled operators, the internet is accessible to everyone.  Another change is that people can communicate more than just words, they can send pictures, files, music, you name it through the internet.
