Three runs in ninth take New York Mets to 5-2 win over San Francisco Giants – MLB Update
The New York Mets’ batters combined to smash three runs in the ninth inning to grab the first game of the three-game series beating the San Francisco Giants 5-2 at AT&T Park in San Francisco on Friday, July 8.
The game was tied at 2-all in the start of the ninth inning, when the Mets’ pinch hitter, Scott Hairston launched a 378-feet long leading homer off the Giants’ closer Brian Wilson. Then Carlos Beltran and Nick Evans each added an RBI single to take the score
to 5-2.
As the batting line-up has provided the desired impetus, the Mets’ closer Francisco Rodriguez tossed a perfect ninth game to take his team into their 46th win of the season.
Before entering the ninth inning, the winner was uncertain, as starters from both sides made some strong plays and each of them allowed two runs.
The Mets’ starter, Robert Allen Dickey, remained scoreless in the first three innings but in the fourth inning, he allowed his first run on a sacrifice fly to the Giants’ Nate Schierholtz. He then allowed a homer to Schierholtz in the sixth inning. Besides
these runs, he allowed seven hits, walked none and struck-out four batters over seven innings.
The Giants’ starter Ryan Vogelsong, was more accurate than Dickey, as he held the Mets scoreless until fifth inning when he allowed his first run but it was a 388-feet two-run blow by Angel Pagan. Besides these runs, he did not consume any but he allowed
seven hits and five walks over seven innings.
"I was not happy with the way I threw," Vogelsong said. "I feel fortunate getting out of it having allowed just two runs. I'm a little off right now."
After the starters completed their innings, relievers from both sides made a strong eighth inning. The Giants’ Javier Lopez did not yield even a single hit and made one strike-out over the complete one inning. However, the Mets’ Tim Byrdak and Pedro Beato
combined to toss top of the eighth inning.
Wilson, who has achieved 25 saves of the season, lost his second game, allowing one-run homer and RBI single. He handed the ball to Jeff Affeldt but could not save him from an RBI single. Ramon Ramirez tossed ten strikes of sixteen pitches.
The Mets managed to hold on until the end and take a much needed victory over the Giants in impressive fashion.
