Three track world records were broken at the 2011 Parapan American Games – Paralympics News
On Thursday the 17th November, three Track World Records were broken in sprint races at the 2011 Parapan American Games which were held in Guadalajara, Mexico. The event is organized by IPC and has attracted 1,500 athletes
from 24 countries who will compete in 13 different sports.
Previously, two world records had already fallen but finally on the fourth day of the Parapan Athletics three track records were conked out.
The primary four finishers under 23 seconds were occupied in an extremely competitive race but the first person who smashed the world record was Brazil’s Yohansson Nascimento (22.24). He claimed the first position on the podium
by beating his own previous best T45 time in the men’s T46 race. Then came Cuba’s Ettiam Calderon (22.54) who broke the T46 Games record for a silver medal, while, Venezuela’s Samuel Colmenares (22.72) claimed bronze.
The second world record of the day fell in the Women’s category of the 100 meter T13 when Cuba’s Omara Durand (11.99) blew away the opposition to steal away a gold and broke a fifteen year old record which was set in 1996 by American
Maria Runyan (12.28). Mean while, Brazilian duo of Viviane Soares (13.05) and Joana Helena Silva (13.28) came second and third respectively.
In addition, the first Games record of the day fell in the men’s 800 meter T37 race when Argentina’s Mariano Dominguez (2:10.88) put in a great effort in the final lap to score a gold medal ahead of Brazil’s Francisco Daniel Coelho
Da Silva (2:16.04), who bagged the silver and Canada’s Shayne Dobson (2:19.06) ended up with a bronze.
Moreover, immediately in the very next race the first American record of the day fell in the men’s 200 meter T36 category as Colombian Jose Florez (26.89) sprinted clear ahead of American Tommy Chasanoff (27.23), who is the former
record holder.
The concluding world record of the day fell in the women’s 100 meter T34 as American Kristen Messer (21.90) cracked a twelve year old T33 record on her way to the gold medal. Mean while, her teammate Carleigh Dewald (23.36) took
the silver along with, Canada’s Christy Campbell (23.05), who scored bronze.
It was a smashing day ahead of Sunday’s marathon and the last day of the track and the field action will see 30 gold medals up for grabs at the fourth edition of the Parapan American Games.
