Question:

Three volleyball questions...?

1. I'm working on my jump serve right now, and my friend told me to watch my foot so I don't step over the line. I noticed that I jump and hit the ball before I land, which is around a half a foot across the serving line. In volleyball, is it ok for a person to cross the serving line if they are jump serving? (By this I mean I jump and hit the ball around a foot before I cross the serving line, then land around a half foot across it)

2. How can I control my pass? Whenever I try, it ends up going in the opposite direction or going back, and I find it very difficult to effectively pass it to the setter

3. I'm in middle school, 8th grade, and I'm 5'2. When I jump, my hands go just above the net, I don't think that's good enough for a spike, how can I increase my vertical jump? And how can I find out what my vertical jump is?

Thanks in advance to anybody who answers

    1. yes its ok as long as you hit the ball first (and i cant believe ur jump serving in 8th grade...i only did that in practice!)

    2. make sure ur feet are in the direction you want the bal to go IE: if ur trying to hit it straight over the net, face ur entire body towards ur target except have ur right foot a little in the front if ur on the right side of the court and your left foot out a little if your on the left side of the court

    3. i have no idea so sorry!!

  2. haha eigth grade and you're already jump serving? that's pretty good. i still prefer over hand spikes thought lol. anyways, its fine as long as you're in the air when you're hitting the ball.

you can control your pass by staying low, having your knees bent (of course, first rule of volleyball, always stay low) get it to hit the area between your wrist and elbow, DO NOT SWING. just push from your legs. and follow through, make sure after you passed the ball your hands are pointing at your target.

btw: at 5'2 its your coach most likely won't play you in the front, unless you're a setter, but it's possible, just start doing this thing called a pencil jump, where you start off at a squat on the ground with your hands together abovee your head pressed together (like an arrowish thingie) and explode up. also, it doesn't matter where you reach the net when you jump, what matters is your strength and ability to aim. you could always push it a little further, which will make it go over the net (with the palm of your hands) sort of like when you're serving, you push up, but do it HARD. so it goes to the ground at that target spot.

  3. 1. yes its ok, as long as you make contact with the ball in mid air it is legal to land in bounds.

(but before you start jump serving make sure you have a good standing serve)

    2. Face the target keep your hands and wrist together. keep your knees bent and DON"T SWING YOUR ARMS! push with your legs.

3.Well to increase your vertical jump you can do many things. I am trying to bring up my jump now. heres what you do. calf risers, squats, sit-ups,push ups, and jump rope(if you can't then just jump for a while).

    hope this helps.

P.S. The vertical jump excersieze really helped me.

  4. 1. When doing a jump serve as long as you contact the ball before you land over the line you are fine

    2. make sure your platform is flat, bend you legs, don't swing

    3. just because you can't reach over the net doesn't mean you can't attack the ball... I played volleyball for 6 years.. and i'm not much taller than you.. I'm 5'6''.. and i only have a vertical jump of about a foot.. and in my freshman season .. i had about 200 kills... but if you want to increase you ups.. find ankle weights and jump with them on .. and when you take them over your ups will improve it might take time at first.. but your ups will increase

  5. To increase you vertical....walk on your toes :) best of luck.

  6. 1. as long as the ball has hit your hand before you land on the line or in the court, your safe. im a jumpserver too, soo its ok bc lets just say someone can jump like 10 feet off the ground(just saying, better to explain, and obviously impossible) they could jump and while in the air they coudl have jumped to the middle of the court(somehow, just use ur imagination, lol) and if they hit the ball before they landed it would be ok.

    2. well remember to allways be ballanced. stay on your toes at all times, soo to test it is if ur in your ready position to pass, and someone pushes you from the front, if ur about to fall or do fall or have to move ur feet to  not fall then ur not balanced. and to tell u the truth when coaches say hit with ur forarms, their right BUT- a proffesional DS/Libero only hits it exacitaclty their 95% of the time, the rest is just pure luck on how they can hit it. if ur prob is tthe ball is coming to fast then just before the hitter or server hits it, concentrate. look at the ball, focus, be the ball, and im completly serious if u block out all other memories, thoughts, the ball will eventually move liek slow-mo, everythign will go slower, and ull surprisingly get to the ball quicker and have tiem to get in the best position possible to pass. Soo hit in your forarms as much as u can, stay focused on the ball, stay balanced, and guide the ball with ur arms, ur dont swing at it, the power that makes  the ball go up is coming from the hitter, not you , your job is to guide it to the setter, even if ur not facing the setter, guide it with ur hands and use ur legs to give it that extra umph.

    3.  to find out how high u can jump, take a big tall tape measure thingy and tape it to a wall or have some one really tall hold it up high. hold it or tape it like about maybe 1 or 2 feet above ur hand/arm extened. soo soemhow do that , reach ur hand up, to see how far it goes up and rememmber how tall u are with ur hand/arm up. then do that again but jump liek u would for a block/spike then the difference is how many inch/feet u got off the floor.  to increase ur jump(im also the worst jumper in the world, thank god im tall so for another year and a half ill be fine for blocking/etc. but then i need to learn to jump, im just too lazy lately, lol) try jump ropeing, or even runnign a lot, will help, jump over cones, side to side back adn forth etc. or just keep practiceing and keep playing, i improved my jump a bit from just playing and going to practice extra, not strenght trainign adn running etc.

hope it helps n srry its sooo long, lol <3 Volleyball!!!!

  7. wow most people dont even know how to serve in the eight grade...and your jumping...im proud!

  8. i am in 8th grade too and i am jump serving and i think it goes down and harder than a standing serve

    soo keep at it

in passing make sure that u r down and that u wont go tooo late or else it would hit the wrong part of ur hands oh ya when u r passing dont swing ur arms and dont lean for the ball square your body to the target and u';ll be fine

and for jumping if u have some wall in ur house jump and try to tuch the cieling... thats what i do and i am 5'7 an di can jump up to a 6'5 its not that high but i try
