The Volvo China Open finally teed off today at the exquisite par-72, Luxehills International Country Club. The event which has total prize money of US$3 million, all the players are looking forward to grab the winning cheque and the trophy.
It will be a challenge for all the players teeing off to cope up with the conditions. Some of the notable players from Asia and Europe are among the probables also. The three-time major championship winner Padraig Harrington from Ireland has teed off already. He is playing alongside the defending champion Y.E. Yang and David Horsey.
Conditions and the weather are perfect for golf. Some of the players on the course are enjoying the conditions and taking full advantage. After the first nine holes completed by a few players, there is a three-way tie on the leader board.
Steve Alker from New Zealand, Richard Finch of England and Martin Wiegele from Austria share the lead after the first nine holes. All these three contenders have a similar score of four-under par. They still have to finish their back-nine holes.
The experienced Alker has already started his campaign in a superb manner. He made four birdies in his first nine holes and was yet to score a bogey. This is a great start by the veteran who has loads of experience playing competitive golf. By having this start, he will surely look to make more birdies to post his name on top of the leader board after the first round.
Englishman Finch only had a single bogey in his first-nine. He also made five birdies and is placed tied on the current leader board. His birdie streak started from the very first hole. Now, it is up to the professional from England to make full use of his form in the finishing holes.
As for the Austrian Wiegele, this was no less than a fantastic start. Having an eagle on the very first hole always boosts the confidence of the player. Weigele have an eagle and two birdies on his score card in the first nine holes.
These three top contenders will be hoping to continue their form and finish the day being the leader.
