I've been lookin at cars on craigslist and stuff. Interested in buying a cheap fixer upper....

If they say "The Car Threw A Rod," how much money would I be expecting if I took it out to the shop to fix that???

Are there any alternative that I could do??

  1. Depending on how much damage was caused by the rod, your looking at quite a bit of money.  You would have to replace the rods, pistons, and rings at the least. That would me a major fix.  You could be looking at replacing the entire motor.  As far as alternatives, you could always walk! lol

  2. If you can't do the work yourself, it is not cost effective.

  3. You have 3 choices, completely rebuild the engine, replace it with a used engine, or install a new engine. Throwing a rod damaged the crank shaft, scored or damaged the block, and probably bent valves. Rebuilding it may not even be possible, (cost effectively) My advice, let that car go for parts, look for a better fixer upper. If you are going to have a shop fix it, you might as well buy a car that doesn't need fixin'. The point of buying a fixer upper, is to fix it yourself and get a good deal.
