Thrilling Quarter-finals determine final eight surfers on day 3 of ASP 3-Star Protest Vendee Pro
The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP 3-Star Protest Vendee Pro resumed with the Quarter-finals at the main event site of La Sauzaie in Bretignolles-sur-Mer, France on Saturday morning, April 21.
France’s Vincent Duvignac, William Aliotti and Romain Cloitre, along with Germany’s Marlon Lipke successfully made it into the Semi-finals after clinching top honours in their respective Quarter-final heats.
The testy surfing conditions prevailing at the primary event site kept the surfers on the back foot yet again, making them work really hard to get their hands on a relatively decent wave-score. The local surfers in particular were doing quite well despite
the challenging huge set of waves on offer, primarily due to their local knowledge of the waves.
The first Quarter-final saw Duvignac continue his winning streak in the latest ASP 3-Star event. The French struggled to navigate his way through the waves, but eventually managed to move to a heat-total of 8.83 points, which served to seal the fate of the
four-man battle in his favour.
Great Britain’s Jayce Robinson successfully made the Semi-final cut as well after finishing with a heat-total of 7.26 points, which served to put him in runner-up place.
Portugal’s Justin Mujica and Basque Country’s Indar Unanue had done quite well to remain in contention for the event title but they failed to put on a promising performance in the first Quarter-final, finishing with a heat-total of 6.80 and 6.16 points respectively.
France’s Aliotti and his fellow countryperson Joan Duru had an intense battle for top honours during the second Quarter-final. Both the surfers fought tooth-and-nail, though Duru eventually conceded the first place to Aliotti after finishing with a heat-total
of 14.57 points against his rival’s 14.93. The top-two finish carried both the surfers into the Semi-finals.
Basque Country’s Txaber Trojaola and Netherland’s Yannick De Jager made a premature exit from the competition after finishing with a heat-total of 6.34 and 3.17 points respectively.
The third Quarter-final saw yet another French surfer, Cloitre, light up the beach with an electrifying performance. The Frenchman went hard at a couple of relatively juicy waves to eventually finish with a heat-total of 14.66 points, consequently claiming
top honours.
Basque Country’s Jatyr Berasaluce confirmed his place in the next stage of the competition as well after claiming runner-up place with a heat-total of 9.20 points.
Guadeloupe’s Charles Martin and France’s Gordon Fontaine rounded out the bottom-two positions with a two-wave total of 7.93 and 5.40 points respectively, consequently getting eliminated from the competition.
The final Quarter-final sent the German sensation Lipke and Portugal’s Frederico Morais into the Semi-finals as they rounded out the top-two positions with a heat-total of 10.70 and 8.56 points respectively.
French Polynesia’s Steven Pierson and Germany’s Nic Von Rupp got removed from the contention for the event tile after finishing with a heat-total of 8.04 and 6.90 points respectively.
