Through what avenues can an Australian move to America?

Question

I am a forty year old teacher and author with a wife and two young children. How would I go about applying to live in America? My wife has no skills, and we have no family or friends in the US.

It will be difficult.  I do not think that being a teacher is sufficiently specialized to be able to get a work visa.  I could be wrong, but a school will have to sponsor you for the visa and I have never heard of them doing so.  Maybe a private school would.  Either way, they would probably only do so if you were willing to teach where no one else is willing to.

You did not specify so I assumed that you teach children under 18.  If you teach at college level, a university might be willing to sponsor you but you will have to be very good.
