Thumb's been hurting for about 4-5 months???

I'm a football player and a wide receiver so i get stubbed fingers all the time. The thing that's weird is that my right thumb has been on and off with the pain for basically the whole summer. If a ball hits it in the right spot, it hurts for about a good 30 seconds then goes away. It keeps on happening over and over again. It doesn't swell at all or stay in pain the rest of the day, just for a short time.

Should i get this checked out or shall i just deal with it???

  1. get it checked out. it could be a pulled muscle, carpal tunnel or bone fracture.it shouldn't be hurting for that long.

  2. get checked out.

  3. Are you very flexible?

I have hypermobility syndrome.  Lost of people are hypermobile and it allows them to to do what they do sports or music.  It is where joints move beyond the normal range.  This can cause pain in some people.

I am not suggesting that you have this but If you are very physical you could just get the same sort of pain as you joints may occasionally get pushed too far too.

I get a lot of pain in my thumb and other digits just from daily use.

The cartilage is thinner at the edges so when your joint is pushed too far it rubs on the thinner cartilage and this will wear quicker.  It becomes inflamed like arthritis (but not).

Resting it and ibuprofen is good.  But as you play your football I think it would be wise to ask to be refered to a physio.  They can advise exercises to strengthen the area to avoid it being affected so much.
