Question:

Thumb injury while catching? ?

I'm a catcher for my softball team and at a play at the plate she slid into my left thumb (glove hand) and bent my thumb back. On the positive side I did get her out but I had to get pulled from the game for a few innings and went back in the last inning and the pain was unbearable. I have a pretty hard head though when it comes to saying enough is enough and kept catching bearing through the pain in other games. Biting through it using tons of Advil and wrapping it. I iced it constantly, elevated it and even heated it after 72 hours after I iced and wrapped it so much it was shrunken smaller than my other one. It has been about a month and a half later and I still have on and off pain. It cracks and whenever I try to use it it kills. I figured it was a sprain, and it probably was, but from endless beatings on it from catching do you think I seriously hurt it??

  1. You probably sprained or broke it (you would know if it were dislocated). If you can see a trainer I would recommend it. They can take a look at it and at the very least show you how to wrap it. Also talking to your coach would be a good idea.

  2. Depends, I would really consider seeing a doctor since you dont want it getting worse and ruining your softball career, if you are able to move it and have full feeling it is unlikely broken. You could have either dislocated it or did a very bad sprain. I would just keep some ice on it and go and have it looked at.
