I live in chicago and right now we are experiencing really bad thunderstorms. I am absolutely terrified. How can I over come this? is my basement really the safest place to be? Even when an EF4 or EF5 hits can I really be safe? How often do tornadoes hit chicago?(specifically the south suburbs hammond, cal city, gary, lansing etc.)

The one last night scared me so much. Now, I'm terrified for the rest of the summer. I just don't like them. Can tornadoes happen at night? just help.

  1. It is difficult to overcome any bad thunderstorm. My suggestion to you is to listen to your NOAA weather radio, watch the news, and try to find a safe place to take shelter. Whether that is in a basement or a friends house. But really no one is safe from an F5 tornado. They are usually a mile wide and pack winds up to 300mph. It is best when you see those type of tornados coming to get out of town while you still can. As far as tornadoes coming in at night. Just make sure you are at the lowest level of you house away from windows. Carry a flashlight, batteries, your noaa weather radio, cell phone, and food.

  2. Listen to the weather for warning and sightings.

If one is in your area go to the lowest most central point in your home. Under a stairwell is good, or an internal bathroom. If you have time pull a mattress on top of you to protect your head.

Tornadoes can happen day or night. Remain calm and think things through and you'll do okay.

Weather.com has a lot of good information.

  3. Tornadoes can happen at any time of day or night. But don't be frightened! During any dangerous storm, it is recommended that you move yourself and your safety kit(usually containing batteries, radio, non-perishable foods, etc. Lists are at your local fire dept. and online) to a room that does not connect to the outside walls. Under stairwells, closets, bathrooms, rooms like that. It is also recommended that you stay clear away from doors and windows! But I'm sure the storms won't be that bad. Illonois is outside the Tornado Valley but everywhere poses a threat to tornadoes. I would recommend during the storm, you call up a good friend, curl up with some popcorn or your pooch and watch a romantic movie or a comedy. Don't focus on your fear. Do something totally relaxing like painting your nails, or snuggling up with a good book. I hope this helps!

  4. tornado's often happen at night sorry to tell you if your that afraid get a panic room built into your house, all the people in tornado ally have one its basically SOP(standard operating procedure) down there to build new homes with one.

  5. i live in chicago to and im soooo scared of tornados to. tornados can hit any time of the day or night and yes the basement is the safest place to go and i heard that your more safe in a big city then in the middle of no where, and im not sure how often tornados hit chicago but just keep listening to tom skilling haha good luck to us all
