Thurlesbeg Host stands first in William Hill Hotbox Bet Stakes at Newcastle on Jan 24
After a nail-biting contest at Newcastle, Thurlesbeg Host defeated joint favourite, Old Fold Medwell, in the William Hill Hotbox Bet Stakes on Tuesday evening, January 24, 2012.
Ahead of the competition, Old Fold Medwell, and Lil Ba were declared joint favourites with the winning chances of 5 to 2, each.
Old Fold Medwell, Hondo Black’s daughter out of Pond Monique, broke swiftly from the gate, and jumped onto lead the pack.
However, the blue b***h was surpassed by another blue b***h, Thurlesbeg Host, who won the 480 metre long Grade A2 Heat by a head’s margin.
Holding the odds of 6 to 1, the daughter of Droopys Maldini’s out of Best By Mile, began her run from the first stand.
She was given a real tough time by the joint favourite, but R Kirk’s trainee eventually pocketed the cash prize of £112.
The runner-up b***h, trained by S Ray, fell 0.02 seconds adrift of the winner, who covered the distance in 29.59 seconds.
The number three place went to another female hound, Stay On Lass – the third blue b***h in the clash. Thurlesbeg Host’s half sister out of Stay Cool remained two lengths short of the runner-up.
With the starting price of 6 to 1, she commenced the show from the third trap, and covered the area in 29.76 seconds. T. G. Edgar’s trainee defeated the joint favourite Lil Ba, by 1 ¾ lengths.
Lil Ba, Skywalker Ace’s son out of Skywalker Zoie, finished fourth on the chart. After his discharge from trap number five, the black and white dog clocked the area in 29.89 seconds.
The fifth place went to Mada, whereas O Gara completed the order of finish. It was a disappointing show by Mada, who was enjoying the winning probability of 3 to 1.
The blue dog, who got crowded on the track, took 30.24 seconds to reach the post.
O Gara’s finishing time was 30.30 seconds, falling ¾ of a length adrift of the second last placed hound. Droopys Scolari’s son out of Waycross Beauty was holding the odds of 8 to 1.
Thurlesbeg Host has been exhibiting a fine show this year. Having finished second in her previous heat, she made no mistakes this time around, grabbing her first victory of the New Year.
