  1. You obviously have not connected your surround system correctly.

  2. are you sure your using a cable that is capable of 5.1 surround?  the red and white cables that come with most dvd players will not give you surround sound, only stereo.  If that is what your using, you need a different audio cable, either digital coax or digital optical cable.  I would look at that before trying the speaker wiring.  good luck

  3. No, there is something incorrectly connected. You should only hear sound coming from the appropriate loudspeaker.

Does your receiver have a test tone generator? If so use that as a comparison to what you have heard with the THX audio optimizer. Double check the connections, by following the speaker wire from the receiver to each loudspeaker.

And what receiver (or dvd surround system) are you using? Adding that to your question would assist myself and others in better answering your query. The more information you provide the better the answer you may receive.

    EDIT:

As the answerer states below this also check the connection between the dvd player and receiver (if they are not one, as in a system). A digital connection, either via coax or fiber optic would be required to output the digital surround encoded on the dvd (either digital dolby or dts), stereo connections only output stereo. That may be your problem in a nutshell.

    2nd EDIT:

Did you try the receivers tone generator, and if so does a similar thing happen? If not it could be an error with the dvd player, since their pretty good at mixing the surround signal when the dvds are created - what i mean is probably not the disc, and if the receiver test tones correctly then something is amiss with the player.

You could try a calibration dvd -

link her for a starting point: http://www.amazon.com/Monster-ISF-HDTV-C...

ya, I know this all started with a "calibration" dvd, but the one mentioned above is a bit more advanced...

If you have any other dvd's with the THX optimizer, compare them just in case the disc you used does in fact have a bad mix.

    One final thought...

If it test tones fine then forget about the THX thing, I've used it before, but without any problems (if I did I would have been worried such as yourself).
