Question:

Thyroid 5.8, pregnant, very bad reaction to synthroid?

I am 4 months pregnant and feel fine. When my doctor put me on half the lowest dose possible of Synthroid, my blood pressure shot up 30 points each. My pulse raced and I felt like I was going to have a heart attack. Off the pill I feel great. I had no problems getting pregnant, (even though I'm 40). Can these tests be wrong, and or, can the side effects be worse for my baby than the TSH of 5.8

  1. Yes, the tests can certainly be wrong.  And you will get different results at different times.  The reaction you had to the synthroid sounds as if you did not need it - that is, your body had too much thyroid hormone when you took the medication.  Racing pulse is one of the symptoms of too much thyroid hormone.  Half the lowest dose possible is a very small amount of synthroid though - I probably take 20 times that amount every day.

You really need to ask your doctor this question.  There is an increased need for thyroid hormone in pregnancy, especially in the first few months.
