Okay so im fourteen and i just found out from my bloodwork i have Hypothyroidsomethinoranother. Basically, my thyroid is underactive, making my metabolism work slower than its supposed to. So, they gave me meds to fix the problem! Now, im not at all overweight. Im 5"5 and about 115lbs. Do you think that the medication will cause me to lose some weight?

  1. Hypothyroidism, if caught early enough, does not always cause weight gain.  Sometimes the effects on diet including lack of appetite are enough to offset the low metabolism, at least for short term.  It is difficult to diagnose because the symptoms are very vague.

The effects of medication do not fully develop until 3-4 weeks after starting treatment, although you should notice a gradual improvement after the first week. As long as you are not taking too high a dose, you should not lose weight, your improved appetite and physical activity will likely offset the increased metabolism.

Periodic blood tests should be done every 4-6 weeks to make sure you are on the right dose.
