Thyroid problems effect having children?

I'm only 22 and the doctors are looking into me possibly having a problem with my thyroid. My mom has gotten me scared about it by telling me that having a problem with my thyroid might mean I might not have children. I don't know what to do if I can't have kids. I would love to have children later on down the road. But know I'm all worried and depressed that I might not have children... Would someone please give a little insight?

  1. I have 2 children and I have hypothyroidism.

  2. I'm no doctor.  Why not discuss this with your doctor instead of your mom?

I know people with thyroid problems that have children, so I think you'll be fine in that regard.

  3. I have hypothyroidism and in most cases it will not affcet your ability to have children. Hypo, or hyperthyroidism are both easily corrected with a synthtic thyroid hormone (just a pill a day). It may be easier to get pregnant if your thyroid if under good regulation, but a doctor can help you do this by monitoring yoru TSH frequently.

  4. You absolutely CAN have children with Hypothyroidism. The doctor just has to watch your TSH level because pregnancy will probably s***w it up. There is no danger for you or your unborn child tho. Relax, everyone i know with Hypothyroidism has kids, me too :-)
