I have 80-hour TiVo. I'm going out of town for a month and I don't have enough hours for recorder all my favorite shows. Is there a way that I can add more hours to my TiVo? If so, how?

  1. No I'm afraid you are going to have to miss some shows. The newer dvr's do record up to 200 hours, though.

  2. Yes, but not easily.

One option is to record all of your shows at a lower quality setting such as "Basic"  quality or "Medium"  quality rather than at "High Quality"  or "Best Quality".  This will allow you to squeeze as many shows onto your existing TiVo as possible.  Although the picture quality may not be what you want.

You can check the settings for each and every show in your Season Pass and change it under the "Options"  settings.  This could be quite a pain in the .... given that you may have a lot of shows to change.

I would also recommend that you change all your "critical"  shows to "keep until I delete" under recording options and "sacrifice" lesser shows.

The other option is to consider upgrading the hard drive in your TiVo to a larger hard drive.  If you or a friend are technically competent with a s***w driver and don't mind opening up your TiVo, you can order a hard drive upgrade from http://www.weaknees.com/ and install it.  This can change your 80-hour TiVo into a 160 hour TiVo or more, depending on how much you are willing to spend (starting around $140).

In some cases you can just add another disk.  In some cases you need to replace your existing disk.  If you replace your existing hard disk, you will lose your existing settings and programs (because they are on the hard disk you just removed) and will need to reprogram your Season Passes.

I did this with my original TiVo Series 1 and was very happy.  I couldn't personally watch low quality recordings.  However, I waited until the TiVo was out of warranty before I did this.

If you want to see how complicated this is, here are the instructions:
