Tiago Pires and Jadson Andre survive Round 2 of Billabong Pro Tahiti – 2011 ASP World Tour
The latest stop of Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour, Billabong Pro Tahiti continued to deliver intense action with the ninth and tenth heat of Round 2 on Friday, August 26, at Teahupo’o in Taiarapu, Tahiti.
Portuguese Tiago Pires collected a comfortable win over Australia’s Kieren Perrow in the ninth heat, moving to the third round while eliminating his rival from the competition in the process.
The 10th heat saw Brazil’s Jadson Andre prevail over America’s Patrick Gudauskas to advance to Round 3 while bringing the competition to a premature end for his competitor.
The surfing conditions at the surfing site came as a blessing for surfers adept at riding big waves, six-to-eight foot plus to be more precise, while testing others for perseverance.
The ninth heat turned out to be a low scoring one as neither of the two competitors looked at ease in the huge swell. As the heat kicked off, Perrow drew first blood by locking a wave to add 2.50 points to his account. He soon followed it up with another
mediocre wave, earning 2.33 points off it to reach a heat-total of 4.83 points. The Australian failed to improve on his score and eventually had to settle for what could only earn him victory through some sort of a miracle.
Pires was not having an easy time catching waves, but eventually did manage to lock one to earn 6.67 points off it. He followed it up with a 2.10-point wave to finish with a heat-total of 8.77 points. The score earned him a comfortable win, earning him a
place in the third round. However, it was not the most convincing performance and the Portuguese definitely needed to up his game if he intended to stay in contention for the event title later on.
The tenth heat saw the Brazilian force, Andre, take on Gudauskas for a spot in the third round. Both the surfers failed to adjust to the conditions and struggled to get big score off their waves.
Gudauskas opened up his account with a 3.33-point wave and added another 3.20 points to his account in the dying minutes of the heat to finish with a two-wave total of 6.53 points.
While the American’s heat-total hardly seemed like a winning one, it was still too early to say anything due to the conditions. However, Andre managed to earn just enough score to overtake his rival on the scoreboard. He earned 3.83 points off his first
business-wave and later collected a 3.57-point wave to finish with a heat-total of 7.40 points and earn a Round 3 spot.
