Tiago Pires prevails over John John Florence in Round 2 of Rip Curl Pro Search – 2011 ASP World Tour
The crowd kept getting treated to a heavy dose of exciting surfing action as the latest stop of the 2011 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour, Rip Curl Pro Search San Francisco, continued with Portugal’s Tiago Pires taking on Hawaii’s John
John Florence in the 11th heat of Round 2 on Wednesday, November 2, at Ocean Beach in San Francisco, America.
Pires got to walk away with a comfortable win from the battle after receiving little challenge from Florence. The outcome of the battle moved the Portuguese surfer into the third round while marking the end of the road for his young opponent.
‘The Portuguese Tiger’ Pires, had not failed to make a solid impact in the latest season of the elite tour. He did show a promising form at a number of evens but the lack of consistency resulted in his early eliminations and kept him deprived of decent results.
Now that the Tour was getting close to its end, Pires was looking to register at least some good result to keep the season from being a total disappointment for him and his fans. However, things had not gone according to his plan on the first day and he ended
up short of top position, which consequently led him into Round 2.
Facing Pires in the Round 2 heat was Florence, the young sensation who had been looking good since making a place among the ranks of elite ASP surfers after the mid-year September cut. Not quite delivering on the first day, the Hawaiian now found himself
facing the Portuguese in a battle for survival.
As the 11th heat of Round 2 kicked off, Florence drew first blood, though with just a 1.93-point wave. He soon went on to add an additional 6.67 points to his account, taking his two-wave total to an 8.60. Not being able to improve on his scores
as the heat progressed, the Hawaiian eventually had to settle for this score.
Pires got off to a patient start, but gradually built momentum to eventually begin his charge. He got hold of a juicy wave in the final minutes of the heat and unloaded a string of impressive tricks to post a 7.50 on the score-board. Keeping the momentum
going, he went on to add another 6.83 to his account off his last wave, finishing off with 14.33 points. The score served to seal the fate of the battle in his favour and consequently carrying him into the next round while eliminating Florence from the competition.
