China’s Tian Houwei emerged as the winner against Indonesia’s Andre Kurniawan Tedjono in an epic Men’s Singles first round battle at the Russian Open GP 2011, in Russia, on June 29, 2011.
The Chinese put up a wonderful show against the Indonesian in front of the packed indoor arena with a fascinating three-set fight, which took 66 minutes of superb skills and talent from both shuttlers.
Tian had to struggle hard to find his flow against the firing Indonesian, who was keeping the speed of the game at the highest level. Both shuttlers belong from top badminton nations of the world, as China and Indonesia are considered to be power houses
in the game.
Tedjono played better badminton against the Chinese, who made some costly mistakes in the ending phase of the opening set and lost the game with a close gap of 19-21, in 25 minutes.
However, Tian bounced back in the second game with a stunning performance. He started the game in an aggressive manner and reached at 11-3 in a flash. He was playing to his full potential in the match against the Indonesian, who became a little slow, which
helped the Chinese to control the game.
Tedjono could not cope up with the aggression of the Chinese, who was playing on a different level. Tian levelled the match by clinching the game with a dramatic difference of 21-6, in just 12 minutes.
The deciding game was an absolute thriller for the Russian crowd, as both players became aggressive to take control of the rallies. It was a battle of nerves and both shuttlers were playing under extreme pressure. Either player could not manage a good gap
until the score reached at 21-21.
At this crucial stage of the game, it was the Chinese player who managed to score two successive points and win the set by a 23-21 margin, in 29 minutes. The 66-minute battle ended in three sets with a 19-21, 21-6 and 23-21 score on the board.
