Ticking noise with low RPM's on 90 hp 4Stroke Mercury

Just purchased a 2005 90 hp 4 Stroke Mercury outboard from dealer. Took it out on a fishing trip this weekend and noticed a ticking noise at low rpm's. What should I check besides the oil level(it is fine).

  1. Take it back to the dealer.  Needs the valve lash adjusted.  Very common on Merc 4/S.  Dealer should have caught that before it left.  Maybe you need to look for a new dealer

  2. It might be the fuel injectors triggering, or if you use your engine a lot it may need a service and re-shimming the valves.

    Hope this helps

  3. 4 strokes don't tick most time you don't know there running> Take back as the valves might need adj>
