  1. There used to be ties in the regular season, but they got rid of them after the lockout by implementing the shootout after a 5 minute overtime.  In the playoffs there are unlimited overtimes until one team scores.

  2. Nope no ties anymore.  There used to be, but only in the regular season.  Now it's five minutes of four on four OT then a shoot-out.  For the playoffs they just keep playing.

  3. well, the 4 OT game u were watching was a playoff game, and playoff games have NEVER ended with a tie. u just cant do it, it wont work. they just keep going with 20-min OT periods of 5-on-5 until someone scores.

in the reg season, ties used to be after 1 period 20-min long of 5-on-5 OT. they changed that rule to:

    1. one 5-min OT period of 4-on-4 hockey.

    2. if still tied, 3 rounds of shootout

    3. if still tied after 3 shootout rounds, add one round each time until a winner is decided.

  4. In the regular season, a tie game goes to a 5 minute overtime.  During this period, teams skate 4-on-4 instead of 5-on-5.  Beginning after the lockout, if a game is still tied after overtime, teams go to a shootout.

Thankfully, there are no shootouts in the playoffs.  Playoff overtime consists of 20 minute periods and the game does not end until someone scores.  This is the most exciting hockey you can see.  Every shot can potentially end the game.  The longest game in NHL history was in 1936 between the Detroit Red Wings and Montreal Maroons.  The game was not decided until the late stages of the sixth overtime period, 116 minutes of hockey.

  5. Before the lockout- In the regular season, if a game was tied at the end of regulation, then one 5 minute 5-on-5 sudden death Overtime period was played. The first team to score was given the win and the two points, the losing team was given one point and an Overtime Loss in the standings. If at the end of the Overtime period, neither team had scored, then it was a tie and each team was rewarded one point.

In the playoffs, they would play sudden death Overtime again, but they would play a full 20 minute period of 5-on-5. If at the end it was still tied, the teams would take their 15 minute intermission and come back on for a 2nd OT. And etc. until we had a winner.

After the lockout-In the regular season, if tied at the end of regulation they would play one 5 minute 4-on-4 sudden death Overtime period. First team to score get the win and two points, losing team gets one point. If still tied go to a 3 round shootout, most goals win. If still tied sudden death rounds until someone wins. Winner gets two points, loser one point

    In playoffs, same as before.

  6. The NHL has taken out the tie in the regular season.  If a game goes to overtime both teams get a point.  Whether a team wins in regulation or a shootout they are awarded a second point for the win, the other team keeps the one point in an overtime loss or a shootout loss.  In the playoffs overtime keeps going until a team scores.  Like in the dallas and san jose series it went four overtimes.  Save after save from Nabakov and Turco.  It seemed like it would never end.

  7. well in the playoffs never ending... for the regular season they do 5 minutes of play with 4on4 then they do a shootout

  8. Not anymore. During the regular season they have a 5 min 4 on 4 OT the do a shootout. But in the playoffs they play regular 20 min periods until someone scores. I think 5 OT's is the record so far.

  9. No. In regular season games there's five minutes of 4 on 4 over time and then if necessary a shootout.

In the playoffs the games just go into consecutive 5 on 5 twenty minute overtime periods until someone scores.

  10. no ties in the playoffs
