Tien Chen Chou stuns Taufik Hidayat in Men’s Singles first round of the Japan Open Super Series
Chinese Taipei’s Tien Chen Chou delivered an incredible performance as he made an upset by beating former Olympic and World Champion, Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia in the Men’s Singles first round of the 2011 Japan Open Super Series, in Tokyo, on Wednesday,
September 21.
Tien Chen participated in the Japan Open as a qualifier and he proved his worth by beating India’s Anand Pawar in his second match of the Men’s Singles qualifying round. In the main round, he displayed a terrific show of quality badminton by playing with
aggression against Taufik, who is currently World Number Five in the Men’s Singles rankings.
Taufik was the favourite for this match as nobody could have thought that the mighty Indonesian would lose to an inexperienced young shuttler. On the other hand, Tien Chen showed that he has the potential to become one of the best shuttlers in the world
of badminton.
In the first game, Taufik struggled hard to find his momentum as he failed to play his normal game and made many unforced errors which helped the lower ranked Taipei shuttler to dominate the game. Tien Chen remained composed throughout the opening game and
finished it with a decent difference of 21-17, by working hard for 19 minutes in the court.
In the following set, Taufik fought back and showed why he is considered as one of the best. He controlled the rallies and dictated the pace of the game with a touch of aggression.
The perfectly executed net shots of Taufik disturbed his opponent who was playing a negative game. Tien Chen failed to control the rallies in the second set and lost it to the Indonesian with the score of 12-21, in just 15 minutes.
The third set was close as both players fought well to their maximum speed and progressed in the match with equal pace. The score entered into the concluding phase of the deciding game, when the Taipei shuttlers played fabulously well and emerged as the
winner with a margin of 21-18 in 19 minutes.
The ending result of this wonderful 53-minute fight was 21-17, 12-21 and 21-18.
