Tien Minh Nguyen beats Daren Liew in Men’s Singles quarter-final at Singapore Open Super Series
Vietnam’s Tien Minh Nguyen defied all odds to reach into Men’s Singles semi-final after beating Malaysia’s in-form player Daren Liew in quarter-final contest at 2012 Singapore Open Super Series on Friday, June 22, in Singapore.
The higher ranked Tien Minh, who is World Number 11 and sixth seeded shuttler in Men’s Singles draw of the championship, dug into his reserves to overpower his Malaysian rival in an epic 56-minute fight.
The sixth seeded Tien Minh was not at his best in the opening set but found a timely rhythm and grabbed the following games to register a wonderful victory over Daren in three games.
On the other hand, the World Number 31 Daren played to his maximum potential and secured the opening set. However, he could not maintain his focus and lost the remaining games without showing his brilliance and crashed out at the quarter-final stage.
In the first game, the higher ranked Tien Minh was not playing his normal badminton as Daren was impressive in the court and took a wonderful lead until the break.
After the interval, Tien Minh tried to show his skills by increasing his speed but failed to reduce the deficit and lost the set with a 14-21 score on the board.
In the following game, Tien Minh was in different mood as he played aggressive badminton from the opening points and took a comfortable lead until the break.
After the interval, the higher ranked Vietnamese continued his impressive performance and stamped his supremacy in the court by winning the second set with a 21-11 score on the board.
In the deciding game, Tien Minh did not slow down his speed at any stage and again set up a tremendous gap until the mid-game interval.
After the break, the sixth seeded Tien Minh continued his perfect play in the court as he did not spare any chance for Daren to fight back in the battle.
The Vietnamese ended up the final game with a sensational 21-13 score on the board.
Tien Minh won this Men’s Singles quarter-final against Daren in rubber games with a superb score of 14-21, 21-11 and 21-13.
