Tiger Watch: Tiger Woods likely to stay put for the rest of the season
Tiger Woods’ seemingly endless vows have continued almost for the whole season and now there are speculations that the Stanford graduate, the once legendary golfer, might not be returning to the course for the rest of the season.
After successfully wiping out the relics of his past, Woods is currently on an extended rehab for his left knee, which has apparently refused to heal from a long and dreadful injury Woods incurred on the TPC Sawgrass this season.
The 14-major-winner made a dastardly move when he fired his 12-year-long associate, Steve Williams, for reasons which are still shrouded in mystery. Williams, who had been carrying the bag for the champion for over a decade, was surprised by the timing of
the move and although declined to comment on Woods' decision, was visibly saddened by the break up.
Woods’ longtime friends and compatriots Mark O’Meara and John Cook, who claim to be in close contact with Woods through emails and text messages, are unsure whether he will be back before the fourth and the last major of the season at Atlanta Georgia.
John Cook said, “I spoke to him twice in the last month. We text all the time; talked to him just a little bit. I think last what he said he gave it a generic ‘It’s getting a lot better.’ But that’s it. He won’t go any further whether he’s hitting balls
or when he’s going to play.”
The rumours have been doing the rounds since his confirmation to play at Notah Begay lll’s charity event, the NB3 Challenge on August 31. Tiger Woods is also rumoured to be playing at the Greenbrier Classic at the scenic West Virginia Resort, although he
has yet to formally confirm his participation for the event at the PGA Tour.
Mark O’ Meara said the 35-year-old has said a zillion times that he is doing fine but has never given any hint of his return to the course in the near future. O’ Meara speculated on the reasons why Woods decided to fire a trusted caddie, saying that William’s
switching sides with Adam Scott for the season might have been the reason Woods opted to pull off with Williams.
Scott has posted some strong performances in the season and the critics are of the view that his renaissance owes much to the professional support he is getting from his caddie.
“My understanding is that maybe he was worried about a loyalty factor,” O’Meara said. “I don’t think Steve Williams is an un-loyal guy, to be honest with you. He works under Tiger’s camp, but who cares if he goes and caddies for Adam a couple weeks?”
Woods has now dropped to number 21 in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) and any further slide on the list will cause all sorts of problems for him as Woods will have to rely on exemptions and invitations to play in the events if in case he drops out
of Top-50.
