Tiger Woods admits it will take years to reach 18 major title wins’ mark
There was a time when the 14-time major champion Tiger Woods was a major threat to everyone whenever he used to enter the major championship field.
Between 1997 and 2008, he recorded 14 major victories and also threatened Jack Nicklaus record of 18 major championship wins.
All of a sudden, he fell from grace and spent four years without raising any of the four championship trophies and the winless streak continues till date.
This year, he made a strong comeback on the golfing scene by winning three PGA Tour events, the highest number of victories by any player during the 2012 season.
However, his performance in the major events is still in question. He participated in the Masters Tournament and finished tied for the 40th position, which was his worst ever finish in the event.
Thereafter, he appeared in the US Open and tied for the 21st spot. The only tournament that saw him contending strongly was The Open Championship where he entered the final round trailing the leader with four strokes.
However, he faltered once again and settled tied for the third position. The defeat taught him something that he described during his visit to the Kiawah Island. He admitted that he may take a couple of decades to reach the mark of 18 major title wins.
"Well, I figure it's going to take a career. It's going to take a long time," Woods told reporters. "Jack didn't finish (winning majors) his until he was 46, so if you go by that timetable, I've got 10 more years”.
“Four more majors is a lot. I've got plenty of time,” he added. “With the training regimes that we have now and seeing guys play well, you can get on the right golf course and contend".
According to him, the competition has become strong in the past few years, as more and more talented players are coming in front and challenging the veterans on top of the game.
"There are more players with a chance now that the fields are so much more deep than they used to be, and it's only going to get more that way," he said.
He is currently rated as the hot favourite for a win in the PGA Championship because of his recent form on the Tour. However, time will decide whether Woods will get a chance to end his major title drought this year.
