Tiger Woods aiming for the coveted Masters in April
A low of 62 at the PGA National on Sunday, March 3, was somewhat unexpected for Tiger Woods himself, who has been facing a serious problem of scoring low heading into the final rounds.
The former world number one, pulled in a majestic round on the final day of the Honda Classic on PGA Tour.
Although he fell short of making it all the way to the top, he is now brimming with confidence with his stunning performance.
Woods was later talking to reporters and said that the newly gained confidence will help him immensely in April.
The 36-year-old Woods must have the coveted Masters on his mind when he talked up the much-hyped month of April ahead.
He said, “I’m thrilled at the fact that each and every week, my game’s gotten better. Each tournament, it’s gotten better, and that’s the whole idea heading into April”.
The 14-major-winner was facing a serious dearth of low scoring rounds heading into the final day and usually succumbed to highs and over-pars to fall out of contention and finishing down the leaderboard.
He played well in Northern Trust Open all through the weekend but fell for a high on the final day to lose the event to raging Phil Mickelson.
Woods later switched back to his Ping grip on his Nike 001 driver and hoped to regain his top yardage with the new grip. He has done well so far with the self-imposed improvisation.
Woods will be heading straight into the lengthy Doral, where the d**k Wilson design normally requires the longest drives off the tee.
Woods barely used his driver at the PGA National but will be unleashing his driver at the scenic Doral to squeeze in as many yards as possible to reach the stiff Dogleg right next to the bunkers.
Woods said about the changes he has made in the recent past and about his strategy in the near future,
“I think I just need the time, I switched coaches, and I got hurt for most of last year, and I started putting the pieces together. Overall, my finishes have been pretty good since Australia on. It was just a matter of `Keep building, keep sticking with it, the process is coming, I'm hitting more solid shots, I'm making more putts, my speed is getting back”.
Woods has not won a single title for the last more than two years. His victory at Chevron World Challenge last year is not considered a mainstream PGA Tour victory.
Therefore, the former world number one is still widely considered as winless for 30 consecutive months on PGA.
He has remarkably improved his position on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) after falling out of the top-50 for the first time in 15 years.
