Tiger Woods and Joe Lacava work for better understanding ahead of Frys.com Open – Golf news
Tiger Woods and his new caddie, Joe Lacava apparently have struck a chord just ahead of the Frys.com Open and the duo seems to be in good understanding to challenge the field at the event.
Lacava, who had been caddying for Dustin Johnson until a fortnight ago, was snatched away by Woods without asking permission from Johnson. The move created quite an uproar among sports critics who declared it as immoral behaviour on Woods’ part. A prudent
Johnson finally moved to pacify the heated emotions and declared that everything is settled in good spirit.
Woods hit a low of 62 at the Medalist Golf Club in Jupiter, setting a new course record during a practice round. He was accompanied by Lacava on the bag as the duo primarily sorted out their ‘Modus Operandi’ for the upcoming event.
Woods said, “I liked his personality on how he was with his players, how he would step in when need be, and he also knew how to encourage and he knew when to step out.”
While speaking of Lacava’s former bosses who included Fred Couples, Davis Love and Johnson, Woods added, “[E]ach player is different, you know. Freddie’s very different from Davis, and obviously Dustin is a little bit different than both of them, and he’s
been successful with all of them.”
At the same time, Woods conceded the fact that both of them will have to spend considerable time on the course before they would finally hit the level of understanding which is required while playing. He jokingly mentioned how they started off on the first
day and said, “[LaCava] basically said, ‘Okay, just let me know what you want on each hole.’ And that’s how we kind of did it.”
Lacava, undoubtedly one of the most grizzled caddies in the sport, was referred to Johnson by his current swing coach, Butch Harmon, who also, had been a swing coach for Woods. Lacava, at that time, was looking for work as his former boss, Couples spent
most of his time off-course in wake of his injuries.
Lacava and Johnson had a glorious season this year where Johnson managed to post some strong performances on both sides of the Atlantic and finally won the Barclays on the FedExCup Playoff Championship. Lacava dumped Johnson right after he received the offer
from Woods without even having a discussion with Johnson and went over to replace the former champion’s previous caddie, Steve Williams.
Woods and Williams parted ways almost a month ago when the former fired the later without citing any genuine reasons. Woods is making a comeback at the upcoming event after a lapse of more than a month.
