Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson head for the Open Championship empty handed
Two legends of the golfing world, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, head for the third major event of the year, The Open Championship, scheduled to start from Thursday, July 19, 2012.
Both the players are, no doubt, one of the best in the world and have the potential to outshine their opponents at any field around the globe.
However, they will enter the Royal Lytham and St Anne's Golf Club on a low note because of the missed cut in last week’s Greenbrier Classic. It was the first time that both the players missed the cut in the same event.
According to Mickelson, he failed to leave a good impression last week because of mental fatigue. It was overall the 64th missed cut of his career.
"I really have been (off)," Mickelson said. "I don’t know what to say about that. It hasn’t been great. The parts don’t feel that far off, but I haven’t been putting them together".
On the other hand, it was a great disappointment for Woods’ fans, as it was only the ninth missed cut of his career and second of the 2012 PGA Tour season.
According to him, he suffered altitude sickness, which was the main factor of his slumping performance in the event.
"I had my distance control dialed in last week and this week I was hitting the ball so far," Woods said. "I know it’s hot. I know we’re at altitude".
"It’s not going to be this warm and we’re not going to be at altitude, we’ll be on the beach,” he said about the conditions at Royal Lytham.
Despite what happened in West Virginia, the golf commentators believe that it will not have any effect on both the players. Woods entered the last two major championships with a win each time in his hands.
Prior to the start of Masters Tournament, he succeeded in earning a victory at Pebble Beach but he recorded the worst finish of his career at Augusta National. He was tied for the 40th position.
Thereafter, he won the Arnold Palmer Invitational and participated in the US Open, where he faltered on the weekend to share the 21st position on the leaderboard.
Therefore, it does not matter as such, whether Woods enters any event with a win in his hand or a missed cut. He is currently considered as one of the most unpredictable players on the PGA Tour.
