Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy fail in the Masters Tournament – Golf News
Tiger Woods had the worst finish ever at the Masters Tournament after he carded a two-over par in the final round on Sunday, April 8, 2012, to tie for the 40th place on the leaderboard.
At the same time, Rory McIlroy also had a four-over par 76 on final day to join Woods on the leaderboard.
Both the players were considered to be the favourites to win the Masters this year because of their recent performances in the 2012 golf season.
However, they failed to impress their fans and remained completely out of contention throughout the tournament.
Woods failed to break the par for the first time in all his appearances at the Masters, in any of the four rounds he played. Moreover, he even failed to display his class on the par-five holes in the tournament.
Woods had a total of 16 attempts on the 2nd, 8th, 13th and 16th holes in four rounds. Yet, he only succeeded in making two birdies and earned a score of just one under, which is way less than what Woods used to have in the past.
“If I look back on the week, I played the par 5s atrociously,” Woods said after he closed with a 74. “This is a golf course you just have to dominate the par 5s, and I did not do that at all this week”.
“I didn’t hit the ball very good this week,” he added. “And what’s frustrating is I know what to do, and I just don’t do it. I get out there and I just don’t trust it at all”.
On the other hand, McIlroy also had some similar issues. He struggled on the first hole every day as his score for the four attempts was a five-over par.
“It was a disappointing weekend,” McIlroy said. “I got off to a bad start and just couldn’t really recover from that. I felt like coming into the weekend I had a chance and sort of blew up the first nine holes on Saturday”.
Meanwhile, Bubba Watson earned his first major victory of the career by defeating Louis Oosthuizen with a par shot on the second extra hole in the playoffs.
