Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker fall in the first round of the President’s Cup
The American team, Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker, on the first day of the President’s Cup had to face harsh treatment by the International Team, Adam Scott and K.J Choi, who thrashed the guests all day, pulling in first solid victory for their team with
a comprehensive 7 & 6. First day of the President’s Cup was scheduled for the foursomes with the 12-member teams of both camps battled their way to the top.
Woods, teamed up with fellow compatriot Stricker, started off the day with an even-par for the first hole of the round at the scenic Royal Melbourne Golf Club. The US Team failed to score a single birdie in the 12-hole stretch after which the International
Team were already 7-Up and the verdict was already out.
“We just played well,” Scott said. “K.J. hit a lot of good shots. I hit a lot of good shots, and the other guys didn’t play their best.”
Woods and Stricker, who the carved the US victory two years ago at the Harding Park and were unbeaten throughout the weekend, failed to come up to the expectations in just the opening round of the tournament this year. Woods, who have been struggling with
his form for the last two years, also had to face the bitter Steve Williams who is now caddying for Scott. Stricker, meanwhile, has just come out of an extended rehab for his burgeoning neck injury he suffered at the Tour Championship in September this year.
“They got off to a quick start, and we just couldn’t keep up,” Woods said. “This golf course is so difficult, it’s hard to make up shots on it.”
Stricker had more or less the same opinion, however he was rather unsettled with the course where the US Team suffered its only defeat in the event’s history.
“That’s the nature of this course,’ Stricker said. “It seems like we were always just a little bit off. We’ve got to do a better job of putting it in play.”
The US Team fell in for three bogeys without carding a single birdie as compared to the International Team which pulled in seven birdies without dropping a single shot in the 12-hole stretch.
