Tiger Woods and caddie Steve Williams split
Tiger Woods has ended his 12-year-long relationship with his caddie, Steve Williams, who accompanied him in 72 wins and 13 majors. The former world number one announced the news regarding the split via his official website on Wednesday.
The website read, “I want to express my deepest gratitude to Stevie for all his help, but I think it's time for a change. Stevie is an outstanding caddie and a friend and has been instrumental in many of my accomplishments. I wish him great success in the
future.”
The news came as a shock for golf fans and critics, who presumed the Steve-Tiger partnership as eternal. The duo have been together since a long time and hence, their on-course chemistry was an example in the golf world. Apart from the chemistry, the duo
shared a strong friendship, which made the two serve at eathother’s wedding.
However, strains of bitterness started to show in their relationship, when the world found out about Woods' extra marital affairs with several mistresses. Williams went months without hearing from Woods. However, after a long period of bitterness, the duo
patched up and were once again, seen in the tournaments.
Every time someone asked Williams if he would caddie for the player, he would mock the press for their pointless and pre-answered questions.
However, two weeks back, when William carried bags for Adam Scott, he remained silent in reply to the questions put by the press. Instead, he just nodded and left.
Williams was shocked with the disclosure of this news however, not because he got fired, but because of the timing of Woods' decision.
“A player has the right to fire a caddie at any given time. And for a player when he's not playing at his best for extended period of time, it's not uncommon to change caddies, coaches, psychologists or bring on a psychologist. We all know the business.
I have no problem being fired. But I'm disappointed in the timing of it,” said Williams.
The news does come as a shock for many, since there were no prior hints dropped by Woods or Williams regarding their split. No announcement was made by the 14-major winner on who would replace Williams on the bags.
